What 'Add-On Options' are available? We offer the following add-on options to go 'above and beyond' the normal conversion experience: Video Touch-ups Option At a minimum, this includes the removal of empty frames typically at the beginning or end of a video, and sometimes, gaps or 'garbled or rolling film' effects between segments in the middle of a video. It is also common, especially for conversions of 8mm film reels, to have numerous microscopic stains or blotches that remain on the film in spite of thorough cleaning efforts prior to processing. During normal playback, if these defects are just large enough, or frequent enough, they can substantially detract from the quality of the video. When this option is selected, we eliminate the worst cases of this (where safely possible) by 'editing out' a few frames (most typically just 1-3 frames per occurrence). Finally, we may make very limited exposure/color adjustments to portions of the video, in an effort to improve video quality. These are just 'minor tweaks' to make sections of bad video at least viewable, and not full color correction efforts. AI-Enhanced Bundle Uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) algorithms to enhance video clarity/sharpness. This option is a "bundle" in the sense that selecting it also includes all aspects of the "Video Touch-ups Option" described above. This is an option that you should consider when you want to 'pull out all the stops' to make the video the very best it can be. This is especially important for videos that capture beloved family members from the past, or special events like weddings, graduations and family vacations. As a result of this process, everything in the video will be slightly less blurry. The improvements in detail are most noticeable for people. All lower resolution media will benefit, but especially 8mm film.

Can I 'mix and match' options? For instance, can I order an option for some of my media but not others? Yes, you would just need to add your media to the order in a specific sequence by first grouping media types that share common options. For instance, if you have VHS full-size tapes that you wish to upscale to 720p and convert using just the Video Touch-ups option, and also some 8mm tape cassettes that you want to upscale but also get the AI Enhanced Bundle, you would follow these steps: Add a first group of VHS tapes and their options; click 'Add to Cart' Add the second group (of 8mm tapes with different options); click 'Add to Cart' Repeat the process as needed for any groupings of media types Then, click the 'Shopping Cart' at the top; click 'Checkout'. 'Mixing & Matching' options is common.

How is shipping handled? For 7 or fewer items, you pay the shipping costs in both directions (i.e. to ship the items to us initially, and then the costs of shipping items back to you). In this scenario, we'll bill you for the return shipment separately. For 8 or more items, you pay to ship the items to us. We provide free return shipping via UPS. Shipments are tracked, and you'll receive an email notice once we initiate shipping.

Why should I convert my videotapes to a digital format? Here are some of the reasons: Videotapes deteriorate Tapes lose their magnetic signal over time; quality and color both suffer, and the tape itself can become brittle. Tapes over 10-15 years old are particularly vulnerable. Newly made VCR tape players are no longer available Manufacturers stopped making VCR players in 2016, and many people no longer have VCR players (even though they may still have boxes of VHS tapes!) Videotapes are a hassle to use Most home videos are lengthy and contain multiple topics. But, it is difficult to find a specific topic, or even to know what other topics exist without viewing the entire tape (2+ hours). Going digital is the first step. Once you no longer need VCR hardware, and your video is just a computer file, you can use the power of intelligent software to make reliving your special moments fun again. That's where the Lucid Video Player comes in... stay tuned for our software!

What are MP4 files, and why are they the default output format?MPEG-4 files, most commonly with the extension of .mp4, are one of the most popular video formats. Just as MP3 files are a standard way of storing audio, MP4 files have become a standard way of storing video and audio together. The MP4 format produces a high-quality viewing experience, yet has smaller file sizes than other formats due to its use of very efficient compression techniques. Many other video formats exist, such as MOV, WMV, AVI, FLV, MKV, etc. They each have advantages, but none are as popular as MP4 for online video sharing. MP4 files work with more streaming protocols, and can be used on all major computer desktop environments (Windows, Mac, and Linux). For instance, the built-in media players on both Windows and macOS can play MP4 files natively, without the need for additional software. And VLC, a popular open source and cross-platform media player, can be used to play MP4 files on Linux and mobile platforms such as Android, iOS and iPadOS.

Do I need to preview my tapes before sending them?If you have concerns about the content or the accuracy of your tape label, then you should check the tape in advance. But, you probably shouldn't force a review of every tape without cause. VCR technology makes this a very long process, and it can turn into a "showstopper"!

Will I be charged if my tape is empty or has little content?Sometimes, this question comes up because some of the larger conversion providers charge a fee even for empty or nearly empty tapes. We won't do this. If we find that there is very little content on the tape (less than 10 minutes for a 2 hr tape) or that the tape is of questionable quality, we'll email you to let you know (sometimes with a video clip). You can then elect to decline the conversion if you wish.
